At Southbound RV Park and Cabins, we’re more than just a cozy place to rest your head—we’re a community that values tradition, respect, and raising up the next generation with strong character and purpose. That’s why we’re honored to host a flag retirement ceremony this Tuesday, in partnership with the incredible young men and women of Trail Life USA Troop TX-1335 and American Heritage Girls Troop TX-3125.
What Is a Flag Retirement Ceremony?
If you’ve never witnessed one before, a flag retirement ceremony is a solemn and respectful way to retire an American flag that is worn, torn, or no longer suitable for display. According to the U.S. Flag Code, the proper way to retire a flag is by burning it in a dignified manner. It’s not just about disposal—it’s a moment to reflect on what our flag represents: freedom, sacrifice, and unity.
These ceremonies often include moments of silence, short readings, and reflections about the history of the flag and the values it stands for. When led by youth organizations like Trail Life and American Heritage Girls, it becomes even more powerful—a beautiful blend of tradition and a hopeful glimpse into the future.

Why We Do It
The American flag isn’t just a piece of fabric—it’s a symbol of everything we hold dear: liberty, justice, and the cost of the freedoms we enjoy daily. When a flag becomes too worn to fly, we don’t just throw it away. Instead, we retire it with the same honor and care it was flown with. These ceremonies remind us to pause and appreciate the sacrifices made by those who serve—and have served—under its stars and stripes.
For the members of Trail Life and American Heritage Girls, participating in a flag retirement ceremony is more than just a civic duty—it’s a hands-on experience in leadership, reverence, and patriotism. It’s a moment to learn, grow, and give back.
Who Are Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls?
Trail Life USA is a Christ-centered outdoor adventure program for boys and young men that focuses on character development, leadership, and service. Through camping, hiking, and community service, Trailmen learn how to become strong, responsible leaders grounded in Biblical values.
American Heritage Girls (AHG) is a similar program for girls, dedicated to building women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country. Like Trail Life, AHG offers outdoor experiences, badge programs, and faith-based mentoring to help girls grow in confidence, compassion, and courage.
Why We Support Their Missions
At Southbound RV Park and Cabins, we believe in building community and investing in the next generation. Whether that’s through offering a peaceful place for families to unplug or supporting youth organizations that are shaping young people into leaders, we’re all about meaningful moments and purposeful living.
We’re proud to support the missions of both Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls. These are programs that teach service, integrity, and respect—values that echo throughout our park and our community.
We’re especially excited to host this upcoming Tuesday’s flag retirement ceremony, not just because of what it represents, but because of who’s involved—young people stepping up, honoring tradition, and choosing to lead with purpose.
Whether you’re passing through or planning a stay, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on the meaning behind the stars and stripes. And if you’re nearby on Tuesday, consider stopping by to witness a ceremony that’s as powerful as it is patriotic.
Here’s to honoring the past and investing in the future.
